From the time I started it I had a hard time putting it down, I have since finished it and I must say it is a great book. When detective Caroline Mabry, the protagonist, talks about her unsuccessful attempts at dating: "On their first date, they talked about leaving Spokane; she was waiting to hear from law school, he from an Alaskan fishing boat. My daughter wanted to do a book report on this particular book and couldn't seem to form her thoughts. Sometimes, a girl needs to lose. Much to his surprise, and to the great detriment of his ability to speak, Arista gave Gilbert her phone number and asked him to meet her at Make-Out Lake that night. As other reviewers have mentioned, the omission of just about every wacky secondary character in "Pink Slip" greatly weakened the book. I love to give this as a baby gift because you can never start reading to a child too early. A note from the author and illustrator at the end explains that they began the project with their own children, to help them appreciate the diversity that's in the world.
